Lady Shipman (Midshipman – Sumthingtotalkabt by Mutakddim) an 11-time stakes winner and multiple track record setter has been retired from racing, according to owner Randall Lowe.
Winner of this year's Royal North Stakes (gr.III) at Woodbine and a close runner-up in last year's Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (gr.I), Lady Shipman was on the board in 17 of 21 career starts for earnings of $902,387.
“Lady Shipman retires as one of the greatest American female turf sprinters ever,” said Duncan Taylor, President/CEO of Taylor Made Farm. “She is an outstanding broodmare prospect. The plan is to breed her and sell her in-foal next November.”
During her three year career, the four-year-old daughter of Midshipman competed against the best of her generation, soundly defeating over 20 colts in the process. She defeated Grade 1 scorers Bobby's Kitten, winner of the BC Turf Sprint (gr.I), as well as Sole Power, dual winner of the King's Stand (gr.I) at Ascot, Al Quoz Sprint (gr.I) at Meydan, and 2-time winner of the Nunthorpe Stakes (gr.I) in Great Britain.
She also defeated Undrafted, winner of the Diamond Jubilee Stakes (gr.I) at Royal Ascot, who also placed in the BC Turf Sprint (gr.I); Sovereign Award champion sprinter Stacked Deck; and Goldream (GB) winner of the 2015 King's Stand Stakes (gr.I). Additionally, she handed a 7 length defeat to Pure Sensation, the outstanding multiple graded stakes winning colt who set a North American record going 6 furlongs on the turf in 1:06.76.
Armed with remarkable speed, Lady Shipman ran Triple Digit Beyer speed figures in 7 consecutive races, including a career best 108. She set track records at both Saratoga and OBS. In the Coronation Cup Stakes at Saratoga, she set the track record going 5 ½ furlongs on the turf in a blistering 1:00.46, earning a 107 Beyer. In the OBS Sprint Stakes, she set another track record going six furlongs on the all weather track in 1:08.8.
Lady Shipman is by Midshipman, a son of Unbridled's Song, and out of the winning Mutakddim mare Sumthingtotalkabt, who is the dam of 100% winners from three to race. She is line bred to Seattle Slew and Buckpasser through her male and female line. Furthermore, her direct female family traces back to La Troienne and her pedigree contains 13 lines of the great foundation mare.
Lady Shipman, who was campaigned by owner Ranlo Investments, retires sound to Taylor Made Farm and will be bred to top sire Uncle Mo.
